Commuters have a higher chance of suffering with SAD (Seasonal Effective Disorder) as they are not getting any daylight in the winter months.

THE PROBLEM:

THE SOLUTION:

Vitamin D supplementation is an easy way to help reduce symptoms of SAD, and Vitamin D is something everyone needs more of, whether or not they have SAD.

PACKAGING WITH A PURPOSE

With ilo, the contents of the can is important, but so is everything wrapped around them. The idea behind the brand was to create something that could brighten someone’s day - from the flavour they picked up, to the words they read and the patterns they looked at. Every part of the packaging was designed with this in mind, turning the can into more than just a container for the drink, but a small moment of positivity.

The visual identity is built around a series of simple ideas, each with a purpose.

ILO MEANS JOY

The name ilo means “joy” in Finnish. Finland is consistently recognised as one of the happiest countries in the world, making the name a natural starting point for a brand designed to bring a little more joy into everyday life.

PATTERNS & POSITIVITY

The repeating pattern across the packaging is inspired by research that viewing and engaging with visual repeating patterns can improve your mood by creating a sense of safety, predictability, and calm in the brain.

A FRUITY SUNRISE

The fruit within each shape represents both the flavour of the drink and a sunrise - a visual metaphor for starting the day and moving towards something brighter.

THE DIAMOND

The diamond became a recognisable graphic device throughout the identity, appearing across the packaging and smaller brand details. I incorporated it into elements such as the dot of the ‘i’ in the logo and the barcode, making the shape feel like an integral part of ILO’s visual language.

UPLIFTING FLAVOURS

The flavour names were designed to have their own positive personality. Rather than simply describing what was inside, they were intended to feel optimistic and joyful, adding another small moment of positivity to the packaging.

DARK TO LIGHT

A subtle gradient runs across the cans, moving from darker tones into lighter ones. This represents the transition from darkness to light and reinforces the positive, uplifting feeling behind the brand.
